"I will take your words and concepts and create the
visuals you need to bring your book to life"
We were so fortunate to have Dawna Gardner, an illustrator, work on our children's book Island Friends. A picture
book is very difficult to create when the authors are not artists, but have a interesting concept. The challenge is to
accurately explain and describe to the artist what is envisioned without the benefit of a written story. Dawna was
exceptionally patient and thorough in interpreting what we were looking to create through her artwork. She and her
husband, in a thick Downeast fog, even took the time to visit the scenery we hoped to capture. Dawna is a very
talented artist and a pleasure to work with. Jeff Bowman Island Friends.
Dawna Gardner worked with me on the cover of my first book, Spring Bear.
Her graphics savvy set my course right several times. Eventually, we
decided the cover illustration would be a portrait of the book's heroine, with
her smile and her eyes showing the determination and courage I wanted
the book to tell about in words, Dawna had a big job in front of her but she
did it, even mastering a special software program she found that would
help. I have the highest praise for her work. The original oil she did is now
one of my most treasured possessions.
